Tonality

When choosing the key for our handpan, the most important thing is that when we hear it, the key speaks to us and conveys the emotion we seek from our instrument.

That said, there are four factors that differentiate them: Difficulty, Versatility, and the mysticism and relaxation they generate.

At Akasha, we have reduced the number of available scales to the four most popular: Kurd, Celtic, Hijaz, and Low Pygmy.

Kurd

The Kurd key is the most popular key in the handpan world, and this is because it is the most versatile of all, containing all the notes of the natural minor scale—the scale used in almost all Western music. Therefore, it is the perfect choice for those looking for an instrument that can be used in any situation.

Celtic

The Celtic key is the second most popular in the world, and this is due to several reasons. The first is that it is the easiest key; anyone can learn to play a Celtic handpan in a matter of days. Furthermore, it is a key that is almost entirely free of dissonances, which makes it excellent for those seeking a high degree of relaxation.

Low Pygmy

Low Pygmy is a magical tonality, as it combines ease of playing with the profound mystique it generates, creating an excellent option for people who want an instrument that is easy to play but at the same time takes us on deep journeys into our inner selves and allows us to express all the complexities of the human soul.

Hijaz

The Hijaz scale is a very special scale, reserved for those who are not afraid to immerse themselves in intense and mystical sound journeys. It is a more difficult scale than the rest because it has sounds characteristic of oriental scales and Flamenco, but once we adapt to it, it gives us unique and unforgettable moments.
